For the average tourist, Limerick is a delightful city and well worth a place on the itinerary. For the connoisseur of art and history, however, it is simply unmissable.
A city with a rich and varied Medieval history, Limerick is also home to the remains of a fascinating Neolithic settlement and stone age centre. The museums are well-maintained and particularly relevant to the area, and the Hunt Museum is especially worth a look, given that it contains a considerable collection of works by renowned masters. Picasso, Renoir and da Vinci are some of the more famous names that adorn its walls.
Of course for the history enthusiast, the real piece de resistance of Limerick is surely King John’s Castle. This is a marvellous structure from the early thirteenth century, well-maintained and devotedly preserved for present and future generations. The Castle offers present-day visitors a glimpse into what life would have been like in Norman days, as well as sumptuous views of the River Shannon!
Scenically, too, Limerick is a treasure. Located on the banks of the Shannon, it looks rather like a jewel in one of Ireland’s richest settings. Those artistically inclined themselves may find especial benefit in visiting, as the sight is enough to stir the soul of any poet or artist. Even those who are more inclined to physical exertion will find something to do, as Limerick offers a lovely golf club as well as various walking and boating activities.
While it may not be the best draw for the liveliest tourist, or those looking for a thrill a minute, Limerick is an exquisite old city with enough to hold anybody’s interest, and an especially grand place for those who are looking to connect in a hands-on way with some of Ireland’s deepest –and most picturesque– roots.
