Located in Kilkenny, Ireland, Kilkenny Castle is a sumptuous twelfth century castle that underwent considerable remodeling and renovation in the nineteenth century. Set in beautiful and extensive park lands, Kilkenny Castle was the principal seat of the Butler family, whose name was originally Fitzwalter. The Butlers were the Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde. The castle was sold to the Irish Government in the mid-twentieth century for the not-so-Princely sum of fifty pounds sterling, and has since been refurbished and open to the public for viewing.
Thanks to the extensive renovation works carried out in Kilkenny Castle, the central block boasts a wide variety of amenities such as a drawing room and library, as well as sleeping quarters decorated in early Victorian splendour. There is a breathtaking Long Gallery, and the old kitchen is used in operation as a tea room in summer months. In addition, the Butler Art Gallery is featured in what was once a suit of servants’ rooms. The art featured in the Butler Art Gallery is a part of the collection from the National Art Gallery, and as such it is on constant rotation. The Butler Art Gallery offers a frequently-changing selection of exhibits of contemporary art.
There are also some lovely ornamental gardens on the grounds, as well as a sumptuous spread of land and gardens lying to the front of the castle. Unfortunately it is incumbent upon the castle to warn visitors that access to the castle is limited for visitors with disabilities; they are requested to restrict themselves to the ground floor and gardens.
Kilkenny Castle makes a sumptuous morning or afternoon jaunt for anybody who is staying within the city of Kilkenny, but it also makes a great trip for those located a little farther afield. A rental car or bus will be helpful in reaching the castle, and you will find that a little extra effort more than pays off, as the castle is well worth a look. |
