Getting Around Dublin

While Dublin city center is compact and easily manageable on foot, you will have to consider your transport options if you wish to explore further.

The city’s transport system has improved significantly in recent years with a good public bus system and a number of private operators. There is also a good light rail system (LUAS) in the city. However, you will be limited in what you can do and where you can go by bus and train. For the ultimate freedom, you should consider hiring a car.

There are countless car rental agencies in Dublin. For a good deal and an excellent choice of vehicles check out Dollar Car Hire Dublin City Center. Dollar has outlets at Dublin Airport and on East Lombard Street in Dublin City Center.

If you are not prepared to brave Dublin traffic, the public bus operator Dublin Bus has a good service that will take you to where you want to go in Dublin. Services run from about 6am to midnight. Public inter-city services are run by Bus Eireann.

There are also a number of private bus operators. Aircoach runs a 24 hour service between Dublin city centre and Dublin Airport. More recently it has started running services between Dublin and Ireland’s major cities and towns. Other private bus operators include Airlink, Citylink and Allied Coaches.

Dublin’s public transport system has been vastly improved by the LUAS light rail network. It currently has two routes on Dublin’s south side. The red line runs from Connolly Station to Tallaght, while the Green Line runs from St Stephen’s Green to Sandyford. There are already plans in place for extensions to the existing lines, new lines and a city centre Metro system.
